opsi travel · Surabaya or Malang
Three days across East Java with opsi travel: a waterfall hike at Tumpak Sewu, the Bromo sunrise by jeep, and the night climb at Ijen, ending in Surabaya or Bali. It's the easiest way to see the province's three big sights without planning a single transfer.

Day one starts with a 06:00 pickup in Surabaya or 08:00 in Malang, at your hotel, the station or the airport. You drive to Lumajang for the hike down to Tumpak Sewu, a wide curtain of waterfalls, with lunch on the road. Day two is Bromo: a 4x4 jeep in the dark to a sunrise viewpoint, then the sea of sand and the crater. After breakfast you drive east towards Ijen.
The last night is short. You leave the hotel late at night for the roughly two-hour drive to the Ijen trailhead, climb to the rim, watch the sunrise and walk down for breakfast. The listing says you may see the blue fire, and that's the right word for 2026: the descent is the rangers' call, the volcano agency advises against it, and JawaPos reported in October 2026 a ban on getting close. Then the car takes you to Surabaya or on to Bali, with the budget option reaching Canggu or Kuta in the late afternoon.
Two choices matter when you book. The regular option gives you a private room in a guesthouse at Bromo and a 3-star hotel in Bondowoso; the budget option puts you in a shared hostel room. Lunches and most dinners are extra. And this is a tiring trip: two very early starts in a row, with hours of driving in between. Guests report little sleep and sore legs, and the listing rules out under-9s and over-70s. Bromo itself reopened on 20 August 2026 after a forest fire closed it for twelve days, so check both parks before you go. Our Bromo or Ijen guide compares the two nights.
From Surabaya (06:00) or Malang (08:00), then the drive to Lumajang and the waterfall hike. Lunch on the way.
A 4x4 to the viewpoint, then the sea of sand and the crater area.
Check out after breakfast and drive towards Ijen, with stops for lunch.
About two hours by car from the hotel, then a briefing at basecamp.
The climb, sunrise over the acid lake, a chance of the blue fire if allowed, then breakfast.
Surabaya, or Bali on that option: the budget option lists Canggu or Kuta in the late afternoon.
★★★★★I had 3 fantastic days. It was challenging but incredibly worth it.
★★★★★Nou was the such a good guide! [...] Just be warned, the hikes are very difficult because you barely get any sleep!
★★★★★Both the driver and the guide were always friendly and helpful whenever we needed anything.

It starts in Surabaya (06:00 pickup) or Malang (08:00), from your hotel, the station or the airport. It ends in Surabaya or, if you choose that option, in Bali.
On the regular option, a guesthouse near Bromo and a 3-star hotel in Bondowoso, in a private room. On the budget option, a local hostel with shared rooms and bathrooms.
You hike Ijen at night, but the listing says only that you may see the blue fire. Going down to it depends on the rangers on the night, and in October 2026 the press reported a ban on approaching it.
Fairly fit. There's a waterfall hike, the Bromo crater steps and the Ijen climb, on very little sleep. Guests report the hikes feel hard mainly because of the early starts.
