Bromo and Ijen in two days

Java Expedition picks you up in Malang or Surabaya after midnight for the Bromo sunrise, gives you an afternoon and evening in a Bondowoso hotel, and takes you up Ijen the next night. Book it for that hotel break: it's the most rest you'll get on a two-day route.

Mount Bromo & Ijen Crater 2-Day Tour

About this experience

The pickup is at about 00:15 at your hotel in Malang or Surabaya. Two hours or so later you're near Cemoro Lawang, where a 4x4 jeep takes you across the sea of sand to a sunrise viewpoint. Then you walk across the sand and climb the stairs to the rim of the Bromo crater. After breakfast it's about four hours to Bondowoso, with hotel check-in around 14:00 to 15:00 and the rest of the day to sleep.

You check out at about 00:05 for the two-hour drive to Paltuding and start up Ijen around 02:00. The rim, the sunrise and the turquoise lake are the plan; the blue fire depends on the rangers, and JawaPos reported in October 2026 a ban on approaching it. After breakfast you choose your exit: Ketapang port (about an hour away), Bali by ferry and then three to four hours to Ubud, or Surabaya, about six hours by road.

There are two price levels. The all-inclusive option covers the park tickets, a guide and breakfast. The transport-only option keeps the car, the jeep, the hotel and the ferry, and leaves you to buy the tickets and hike without a guide. Groups are small, up to ten people. This is the same operator as the all-inclusive Ijen hike, and Bromo reopened on 20 August 2026 after a fire closed it in August, so check both parks before you travel.

  • Bromo sunrise by 4x4 jeep and a walk to the crater rim
  • An afternoon and evening in a Bondowoso hotel between the two climbs
  • Small groups of up to 10
  • Drop-off at Ketapang, in Bali or back in Surabaya
  • Tolls, fuel, parking and the ferry ticket included

Everything worked out great. Mount Bromo is easy to climb. Ijen requires a lot of stamina.

Tips before you book

  • Sleep in the afternoon in Bondowoso. You're up again before midnight.
  • Bring warm layers for both climbs: the listing gives 11 to 15 C in the early morning.
  • Wear shoes with good grip. Ijen's sandy descent is the harder half.
  • Check which option you've booked: transport-only leaves the tickets and guide to you.
  • Avoid an Ijen day that falls on the first Friday of the month (6 November, 4 December 2026).
