YKExplore collects you around midnight in Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo, does the Bromo sunrise by jeep, drives you to a budget bed in Banyuwangi and takes you up Ijen the next night before dropping you in Bali. It's the backpacker route across East Java: cheap, shared and packed tight.
Pickup is at midnight to 00:30 in Surabaya or Malang, or 01:45 to 02:00 in Probolinggo. A coach takes you about 2.5 hours to Bromo, where a classic 4x4 jeep runs the park: the sunrise, a 1.5 km walk with 250 steps to the crater edge, a viewpoint with local snacks. Then comes the long one, about six hours to Banyuwangi and a night in a homestay or dorm.
Wake-up is at 00:30. The Ijen trailhead is about an hour away, which is the advantage of sleeping in Banyuwangi rather than Bondowoso. After the climb and the sunrise you drive to the port, take the hour-long ferry and ride about three and a half hours on to Bali, with drop-offs listed in Ubud, Canggu, Denpasar, Kuta, Uluwatu and Pemuteran. Gas mask, flashlight, goggles, the health certificate and both park tickets are included.
Know what budget means here. Solo travellers share a room with another guest of the same gender, toiletries may not be provided, and the schedule is tight. Guests in September 2026 also report that Ijen was closed by the forest fire during their trip: one couldn't do the second day at all, another praised how the team reorganised.
