Booking choice: The all-inclusive Ijen hike, from $15 per person. Check dates Tour details
The Ijen trail is short and well used. Hundreds of people walk it on a busy night, and the sulfur miners walk it twice a day with loads heavier than themselves. Most reasonably fit adults reach the rim.
What makes it hard is the timing. You start at 2 a.m. after a midnight pickup, or after an afternoon of driving from Bali. Here is the trail in numbers, where it bites, and how it compares with Bromo and Indonesia's real summit climbs.
The quick answer
Moderate. From the Paltuding gate at about 1,850 m it is roughly 3 km and 500 m up to the crater rim at about 2,386 m, usually 1.5 to 2 hours at night and about an hour down. The steep, sandy middle section and the lack of sleep are the hard parts. The descent to the crater floor, if it is allowed, is steep loose rock in gas. Bromo is easier; Rinjani and Semeru are in another league.

How difficult is the Mount Ijen hike?
Moderate for anyone used to walking uphill. The trail is wide and sandy with no scrambling, but it is steady climbing in the dark at altitude.
Guests sum it up better than any grade. Lisa, who did Bromo and Ijen in October 2025: "Mount Bromo is easy to climb. Ijen requires a lot of stamina." Zac, in October 2026: "Just be warned, the hikes are very difficult because you barely get any sleep!"
The difficulty comes in layers. The slope is steady and steep in places. The air at 2,000 m is thinner than you are used to. You walk on 3 or 4 hours of sleep at most. And near the top, the wind can push sulfur gas across the path. Take it slowly and nearly everyone makes it.

How long does it take to walk up Mount Ijen?
About 1.5 to 2 hours up and about an hour down. A slow walker with breaks may need 2.5 hours.
Here is a typical night, taken from the itinerary of the 24-hour trip from Bali. Banyuwangi starts are the same from Paltuding on, with a pickup around midnight instead.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 00:00 | Health check and certificate on the way up |
| 01:00 | Arrive at the Paltuding car park, briefing, toilets, coffee |
| 01:45 to 02:00 | Start walking when the gate opens |
| 03:00 to 03:30 | Reach the crater rim |
| Before 05:00 | Descent to the crater floor, only if allowed |
| 04:30 to 05:30 | Sunrise from a viewpoint on the rim |
| 06:00 to 07:30 | Walk down to Paltuding |
A guide keeps the group together, so groups of 15 to 20 move slower than couples. If you hate waiting, a smaller group helps.
A midnight pickup in Banyuwangi means a short drive and a little more sleep before the climb.
Check dates for the all-inclusive Ijen hikeHow high is Mount Ijen?
The hike ends on the crater rim at about 2,386 m. The highest point of the Ijen complex is 2,769 m, but tours don't go there.
The trailhead at Paltuding sits at roughly 1,850 m, so you gain about 500 m. That summit figure of 2,769 m belongs to a peak called Gunung Merapi within the Ijen complex, not the famous Merapi near Yogyakarta (Wikipedia). Kompas gives the crater at 2,386 m above sea level.
Altitude sickness is rare this low, but you will notice the thinner air on the steep part. The cold is the bigger surprise: listings put the rim at about 8 to 13°C at night, and you will be standing still and sweaty at sunrise. Bring a warm layer, a hat and gloves.

What is the Ijen trail like?
A wide, sandy path through casuarina trees, steepest in the middle, with a rest stop roughly halfway and a gentler last stretch to the rim.
- Surface: packed sand and grit. Dusty when dry, slippery when wet, worse going down. Shoes with grip matter more than boots.
- Gradient: the first stretch eases you in, then the middle climbs steadily. Most people stop at the rest shelter to breathe.
- Light: none. Bring or borrow a headlamp; tours include one.
- Traffic: miners with empty baskets going up, loaded ones coming down. Step aside for them.
- Trolleys: miners also push visitors up in wheeled carts they call taxis. In 2022 a miner told Mojok a ride earned about Rp500,000 to 800,000 from Indonesian visitors and around Rp1,000,000 from foreigners. Agree the price before you sit down.

A trekking pole comes in the price, along with the gas mask, guide, entry and breakfast.
Explore the Banyuwangi or Ubud tour Tour detailsHow hard is the descent into the Ijen crater?
The hardest part of the night, when it happens: a steep path of loose rock and boulders down into the gas, roughly 45 minutes each way.
Operators call it the 600 m descent. It drops from the rim to the crater floor where the miners work and the blue fire burns. You climb down over rocks with a headlamp, often in a queue, with gas blowing through. Coming back up, tired, is harder still.
In 2026 it is often not on offer. The volcano agency advises visitors not to descend toward the crater floor (ESDM), the mine puts the fire out to save sulfur, and in October 2026 the press reported a ban on approaching it. Tours promise it only "if safe and approved by your guide". Plan for the rim; take the floor as a bonus. The details are in the blue fire guide.

How fit do you need to be, and can kids do it?
Fit enough to walk uphill for two hours. Children can go on some tours from age 7, and everyone needs a health certificate issued within three days.
The park asks for a health certificate issued no more than three days before your visit, and advises people with heart disease, asthma, respiratory infections or breathing disorders not to come (park portal). Tours arrange a quick check at a clinic on the way. It is not a formality: after a visitor died of a suspected heart attack on 30 December 2023, the park closed for four days to tighten the rules (Kompas).
The all-inclusive hike is not for children under 7. Older kids who walk well usually manage; carry their layers and snacks. Adam, in May 2026: "I did struggle a little with the hike but the team really helped me."
Health certificate, mask and headlamp sorted for you, with a guide who sets the pace.
Check dates for the all-inclusive Ijen hikeIs Ijen harder than Bromo?
Yes. Bromo is a jeep ride and a short walk up a few hundred steps; Ijen is a two-hour climb on foot.
At Bromo, a jeep takes you to the Penanjakan viewpoint at 2,770 m for sunrise, then across the Sea of Sand. The crater rim is a walk across the sand and up a staircase. From Cemoro Lawang the whole thing is about 45 minutes on foot (Wikipedia).
| Ijen | Bromo | |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | About 3 km up, 3 km down | Sand and stairs to the crater rim |
| Climb | About 500 m | Short; the jeep does the rest |
| Start | 2 a.m. at the gate | Small hours, for the sunrise jeep |
| Gas | Sulfur on the rim, masks needed | Smell at the crater, less exposure |
| Hardest bit | Crater descent, when allowed | The stairs, in a crowd |
On a combined trip, Bromo comes first and Ijen second, on even less sleep. Bromo or Ijen compares the two nights in full.
What is the toughest hike in Indonesia?
Not Ijen. Rinjani on Lombok (3,726 m) and Semeru in East Java (3,676 m) are multi-day climbs, and both have closed or limited their summits in recent years.
Rinjani is a two to four day trek to 3,726 m with a steep scree summit push. In June 2025, Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins fell about 600 m near the summit trail and was found dead four days later (Arab News). Semeru, the highest mountain on Java, closed to climbers after volcanic activity on 19 November 2025 and reopened on 24 April 2026 only as far as the lake at Ranu Kumbolo, with local guides required (Merah Putih).
Ijen is the one you can do on a single night from a hotel bed. If you are fit and want a real mountain, Rinjani is the trip. If you want a crater, a sunrise and a story, Ijen is enough.

Two volcanoes, one hotel night in between: Bromo sunrise by jeep, then the Ijen climb the next morning.

Do I need trekking poles for Ijen?
They help on the way down, when the sand is slippery. The Banyuwangi or Ubud tour includes one; on other tours, bring your own.
Can I hike Ijen without a guide?
No published rule forces you to hire one for the rim, but the park strongly recommends a licensed guide and tells hikers never to walk alone or leave their group.
What should I wear for the Ijen hike?
Shoes with grip, long trousers, a warm jacket, a hat and gloves. The rim is about 8 to 13 degrees at night, and you stand still for the sunrise.
Is the Ijen hike harder in the rain?
Yes. The sandy trail turns slippery, especially on the way down, and the views can vanish in cloud. Tours run in light rain; the park closes in severe weather.
