Booking choice: The 3-day Bromo and Ijen route, from $173 per person. Check dates Tour details
Bromo and Ijen are usually sold together, and most travellers do both. If you only have time for one, the choice is easier than it looks: it depends on how much you want to walk, where you are coming from, and whether you want to see a mine at work.
Both had a rough 2026. Bromo closed for 12 days in August after a savanna fire; Ijen closed for most of September after a forest fire. Both are open in October 2026. Here they are side by side.
The quick answer
Bromo is the easier night: a jeep to a sunrise viewpoint, then the Sea of Sand and a few hundred steps to a smoking crater. Ijen is a real 2-hour hike to a mining crater with an acid lake, sulfur miners and, sometimes, the blue fire. If you can only do one and you are coming from Bali, do Ijen; from Yogyakarta or Surabaya, Bromo is closer. To do both, a 2-day tour works, a 3-day tour is kinder.

Is Bromo or Ijen better?
Neither. Bromo is the bigger view for less effort; Ijen is the stranger place and the better hike.
The two nights at a glance:
| Bromo | Ijen | |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | Sunrise over the caldera, the Sea of Sand, a smoking crater | Acid lake, sulfur mine, miners, sunrise, maybe the blue fire |
| How you get there | Jeep to the viewpoint, then a walk | About 3 km on foot, 500 m up |
| Start | Small hours, for the sunrise jeep | Gate opens at 2 a.m. |
| Effort | Easy, plus stairs | Moderate, at night |
| Foreign entry fee | Rp255,000 a day (since Oct 2024) | Rp150,000 a day (since Oct 2024) |
| Base | Cemoro Lawang, Probolinggo, Malang | Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, or Bali |
| 2026 closures | 8 to 19 August, fire | 4 to 27 September, fire; first Fridays |
Do both in three days, with a waterfall on day one and a Bali drop-off at the end.
Check dates for the 3-day Bromo and Ijen routeWhat is the Bromo night like?
A jeep picks you up in the small hours, climbs to a viewpoint for sunrise over the caldera, then drives you across the Sea of Sand to walk up to the crater.
The usual viewpoint is Penanjakan at 2,770 m, above Bromo itself (2,329 m), with Semeru on the skyline on a clear morning (Wikipedia). After sunrise the jeeps drop down into the Sea of Sand, a protected plain of volcanic sand inside the old caldera. From there you walk, or ride a horse, to the foot of the stairs and climb to the rim of the active crater.
It is busy. The park admits up to 2,752 visitors a day (Antara), most of them heading for the same viewpoints at the same hour.

Is Mount Bromo a difficult hike?
No. The jeep does the climbing. You walk across the sand and up a staircase to the crater rim, which takes most people under an hour.
Lisa, who did both in October 2025, put it in one line: "Mount Bromo is easy to climb. Ijen requires a lot of stamina." The hard part of Bromo is the hour: you are up around midnight, and on a combined tour you do it again the next night at Ijen. Zac, on the 3-day route in October 2026: "Just be warned, the hikes are very difficult because you barely get any sleep!"
For the Ijen side in detail, see how hard the Ijen hike is.

A hotel night in Bondowoso between the two volcanoes, so you sleep in a bed before Ijen.
Explore the 2-day Bromo and Ijen tour Tour detailsIs Mount Bromo still active, and is it safe now?
Yes, Bromo is active. In August 2026 it was at Level II and the geology agency asked people to stay 1 km from the active crater. The park reopened on 20 August after a fire.
Bromo last erupted in December 2023, and it has thrown out rocks before: an eruption in 2004 killed two people (Wikipedia). On 9 August 2026, Badan Geologi said Bromo was at Level II, Waspada, and asked residents, tourists and climbers not to enter the area within 1 km of the active crater (Okezone). That radius covers the crater rim.
The savanna fire that started on 3 August closed every gate on the night of 8 August; 2,056 visitors asked for refunds (Infobank). The park reopened at 00:01 on 20 August, with fires and cigarette butts banned (Antara). Before you go, ask your operator whether the rim stairs were open that week. The viewpoint and the sand are the main event anyway.

Can you do Bromo and Ijen in one trip?
Yes. That is how most people see them. Two days is the minimum; three days gives you a proper night's sleep in between.
The drive is the catch. Bromo to Bondowoso is about 4 hours, and Bromo to Banyuwangi about 6, according to the tour itineraries. A 2-day tour does Bromo at dawn, drives all morning, sleeps in the afternoon and gets up at midnight for Ijen. A 3-day tour adds a buffer day or a stop like Tumpak Sewu.
| Tour | Days | Start | End | Night(s) | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bromo and Ijen 2-day | 2 | Malang or Surabaya | Bali or Surabaya | Hotel in Bondowoso | $94 |
| Budget 2-day, Bali drop-off | 2 | Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo | Bali | Homestay or dorm | $130 |
| Tumpak Sewu, Bromo and Ijen | 3 | Surabaya or Malang | Surabaya or Bali | Guesthouse, then hotel | $173 |
| Private tour from Bali | 3 | Bali | Surabaya flight or train to Yogyakarta | Two nights | $545 pp |
The 2-day tour is run by Java Expedition, the same company behind the all-inclusive Ijen hike.
Which way round: Bromo first or Ijen first?
Bromo first if you are travelling east toward Bali; Ijen first if you start in Bali and head west into Java.
Most routes run west to east: Yogyakarta or Surabaya, then Bromo, then Ijen, then the ferry to Bali. You end the trip a short ride from a beach. Starting from Bali, the private tour reverses it and finishes where Java's flights and trains are.
Avoid any plan that does Ijen and Bromo on consecutive nights without a bed in between if you are not used to night hikes. Amalia, on the 2-day tour in June 2026: "Be prepared for little sleep but it’s so worth it."
Malang or Surabaya to Bali in two days, with a real hotel bed before the Ijen climb.
Check dates for the 2-day Bromo and Ijen tourIf you only have one night, which should it be?
From Bali, Ijen: it is the closer volcano. From Yogyakarta or Surabaya, Bromo is easier to reach and easier to do.
Ijen is a short hop from Bali's west coast and the only one of the two you can do as a day trip from there. See Ijen from Bali. Bromo is closer to Surabaya and Malang and asks almost nothing of your legs.
Our pick, if you are fit: Ijen. A sulfur mine at dawn, with men carrying loads up a crater wall beside an acid lake, is a scene you won't find elsewhere. Bromo's sunrise is beautiful, and it is also on half the postcards in Java.

One night, one volcano: the Ijen climb from Banyuwangi, or from Bali with the ferry included.

Is Bromo or Ijen more dangerous?
Ijen has more day-to-day hazard from sulfur gas and the steep crater descent; Bromo's risk is eruptions, which is why its crater area closes when the alert level rises.
How many days do you need for Bromo and Ijen?
Two at minimum, three to sleep properly. Two-day tours drive about 4 to 6 hours between the volcanoes.
Is Bromo open in October 2026?
Yes. The park reopened on 20 August 2026 after the savanna fire. Check the crater rim access with your operator, as the alert level sets the safe distance.
Can you see the blue fire at Bromo?
No. Blue fire is an Ijen phenomenon, and even there it is not guaranteed.
