Booking choice: The all-inclusive Ijen hike, from $15 per person. Check dates Tour details
Ask people who have done it and most say yes. Guests on the Bromo and Ijen trips write lines like "Tough activity but was worth it." and "It's a tiring day trip, but it's worth it!" The angriest reviews we read are about the blue fire.
Our verdict, up front: Ijen is worth it if you go for the crater, the sunrise and the miners. It is not worth a 22-hour round trip for the fire alone.
The quick answer
Yes, for most fit travellers, if you book it as a sunrise hike to a working sulfur crater and treat the blue fire as a bonus. A night costs from $15 on a tour from Banyuwangi or $55 from Bali, park entry included. Skip it if you have heart or breathing problems, if the blue fire is your only reason, or if the day trip from Bali would eat a holiday that has no spare night.

Is Ijen really worth it?
Yes, if you want a hard, strange, memorable night. No, if you are hoping for a guaranteed blue fire show.
The good: a turquoise acid lake a kilometre wide, steam pouring off the crater floor, sunrise over Mount Raung and the plateau, and men carrying sulfur up a crater wall. Nobody else in the world sells this view.
The hard: a midnight start, a steep sandy trail, sulfur gas, crowds on busy nights, and a fire that may be out, off limits, or not natural. Carla, on a Bromo and Ijen trip in July 2026: "2 very challenging hikings to the top of mount Bromo and Ijen… but worth it."
The standard night from Banyuwangi: pickup, guide, mask, headlamp and health certificate.
Check dates for the all-inclusive Ijen hikeWhat do you see at Ijen if there is no blue fire?
The crater lake, the steam vents and the sulfur pipes, the miners at work, and sunrise over the Ijen plateau with Raung on the horizon.
- The lake: the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world, about 1 km across (Wikipedia), turquoise in the morning light.
- The steam: white sulfur clouds pouring off the vents by the water.
- The mine: yellow and orange sulfur building up where the pipes cool the gas.
- The miners: coming up the crater wall with full baskets, often while you are watching the sunrise.
- The sunrise: from a viewpoint on the rim, over the plateau and Raung's cone.
East Java's conservation office has long said the park sells the sunrise and the crater view, not the blue flame (detikJatim). Judge the night on those.

How much does a night at Ijen cost?
From $15 on a tour from Banyuwangi, $55 from Bali, $94 to $173 as part of a Bromo and Ijen trip. On your own, park entry alone is Rp150,000.
What the bill looks like:
| Item | Cost (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Park entry, foreigners | Rp150,000 a day | detikJatim; online only, non-refundable |
| All-inclusive hike | From $15 | Banyuwangi start; entry, guide, mask, certificate |
| Midnight group tour | From $19 | Driver-only or a shared group of 15 to 20 |
| Banyuwangi or Ubud tour | From $38 | Pole, mask, breakfast included |
| 24-hour trip from Bali | From $55 | Ferry and Bali pickup included |
| Bromo and Ijen 2-day | From $94 | Hotel night in Bondowoso |
| Miners' trolley ride | About Rp1,000,000 for foreigners | A 2022 figure, per Mojok; agree the price first |
The cheapest tours are cheap because they start in Banyuwangi or leave out the guide. Check the option you click: the from-price rarely includes a Bali pickup.
Who should skip Ijen?
People with heart disease, asthma or breathing problems; children under 7 on most tours; anyone who only wants the blue fire; and Bali visitors with no spare night.
- Health: the park advises people with heart disease, asthma, respiratory infections and breathing disorders not to come, and requires a health certificate (park portal).
- Young kids: the all-inclusive hike is not for under-7s, and the gas is harder on small lungs.
- Blue fire hunters: in 2026 the mine extinguishes it, the agency advises against the descent, and JawaPos reported a ban on approaching it (JawaPos).
- Short Bali holidays: the day trip is about 22 hours. If that costs you a beach day you care about, skip it.

The rim, the lake and the sunrise, with the descent only if it is safe on the night. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Only if you can't sleep a night in Java. The volcano part is about 5 hours of a 22-hour trip.
Guests who do it say it was worth it and also that it was long. Shelley, in July 2026: "Transport from Bali was time consuming but well arranged." The 24-hour trip is well run, and if your dates are fixed in Bali it is the way to go.
With one spare night, go to Banyuwangi, sleep, climb, and spend the afternoon in Baluran or on the ferry back. Same crater, less suffering. The full comparison is in Ijen from Bali.

What is life like for the Ijen sulfur miners?
Hard and badly paid. Miners carry 75 to 90 kg of sulfur up about 300 m to the rim and 3 km down, and earned about Rp1,250 a kilo in 2022.
Around 200 miners take out about 14 tonnes a day (Wikipedia). In 2022 a miner called Ahmad told Mojok that he carried 200 to 300 kg a day in about five round trips, at Rp1,250 a kilo: roughly Rp250,000 to 300,000 a day. Many also push tourists in trolleys, which pays far better than sulfur.
The work wrecks lungs and backs. Many breathe the gas with little more than a cloth over the face. Seeing it is uncomfortable, and it should be.

Is it OK to photograph the Ijen miners?
Yes, with care. Ask first, don't block the path, and if someone poses for you, pay them or buy a sulfur carving.
- Ask: a gesture at your camera is enough. Most say yes; respect a no.
- Give way: a miner with 80 kg on his shoulder has right of way, always. Never stop him for a photo on the steep path.
- Pay fairly: if a miner stops and lets you lift his load or poses, a tip is fair. Miners sell small sulfur carvings; buying one puts money straight into their hands.
- Skip the trophy shot: lifting a basket for a selfie is a cliché that holds up a working man.
Your guide knows many miners by name. Ask them how best to do it.
Tips for the crew are built into the price, and your guide knows the miners on the trail.
Check dates for the all-inclusive Ijen hikeWhat can go wrong on the night?
Closure, cloud, gas and a closed descent. Booking a tour with free cancellation covers the first; nothing covers the others.
The park closes on the first Friday of each month (in 2026 the last two are 6 November and 4 December) and at short notice for fire or volcanic activity, as from 4 to 27 September 2026. Guests on one trip that month wrote: "Due to the fires, we were unable to complete the second day or go down to the crater." Cloud can hide the sunrise. Gas can push you back from the rim. Some cheap tours run late: the midnight group tour's listing warns pickups are not punctual.
Keep your expectations on the crater and you will rarely be disappointed. Check the closure days before booking.

From Bali with everything included, ferry and food too, if you can't spare a night in Java.

Is Ijen worth it without the blue fire?
Yes, for most people. The sunrise, the acid lake and the miners are there every open day. If the fire is your only reason, skip it or wait for confirmed access.
How much should I budget for Ijen?
From $15 on a Banyuwangi tour, $55 from Bali. Add tips if they are not included, and around Rp1,000,000 if you want a miner to push you up in a trolley.
Is Ijen or Bromo more worth it?
Ijen is the more unusual place and the better hike; Bromo is easier and the bigger sunrise view. See our Bromo or Ijen guide.
Is Ijen too touristy?
It is busy on weekends and holidays, with long lines of headlamps on the trail. Weekday nights are quieter, and the crater is big enough to find your own spot at sunrise.
